What do you think about the relationship between Thomas and Victor?
In the movie Smoke Signals Thomas and Victor had a strong friendship. First thing I noticed is they have been through similar experiences. When Thomas was a baby his parent died in a fire and was left with his grandma. Victor’s dad took off and died. I think Thomas was more relatable to Victor after his dad died. I though it made their friendship stronger.
I think Victor in a way looks out for Thomas. And vice versa with Thomas. Victors tough because his dad taught him to be, so I can kind of understand why in the beginning of the movie when there walking he freaks out on him and throws his canteen with water in it on the ground. But you can see the bond they share in the beginning of the movie when Victors playing basketball and in a way sticks up for Thomas when the guys victors playing with start to pick on him. Victor was hard on Thomas but you could see he cared about him as a friend. I think by the end of the movie there friendship grows.

ReplyDeleteI too noticed how they had similar lives which building a team together from this is a virtue!! Overtime you can get through the obstacle of differences to victory together!! It truly is a blessing to have someone in your life who you relate to on a personal level!! Struggles are exactly what we need sometimes in our lives as well...not having obstacles would create bigger problems...Competition and a mentor are a huge reward in our lives as well which is what I also think Victor and Thomas found in each other...thanks for the reading!! Samantha,
ReplyDeleteYou can tell that Victor cares about Thomas even though he can be very hostile towards his. For example, he throws his canteen and he's always telling him to shut up. I think that he's this way because he has so much anger. It's hard for him to express kindness towards his loved ones.
I can agree with you on the fact that he looks out for Thomas. He does it in his own way. He explains to him that it's necessary to be aggressive so that others won't walk all over you. He also tells him that he needs to let his hair down because it's the most important part of an Indian man. Victor still somewhat talks down to him, but he means well.
Hello, there friendship did grow. When growing up, Victor wasn't very friendly towards Thomas, he disliked him. In a way, I think Thomas looked after Victor. Thomas changed him to do better.
ReplyDeleteTowards the ending, was when Victor truly felt Thomas a friend to him. He learned a lot about Thomas and knew what kind of person he was. Overall, Victor needed to get to know himself more, he was always upset and didn't give it a chance, but Thomas change that. He show him more of life, and how great it is to live it. It was a wake up call for Victor.
They both grew to tolerate one another, and there bond became closer. Victor acknowledged him as someone special, it must have meant a lot towards Thomas for saying that.
Thanks, Lesley
Hi Samantha,
ReplyDeleteOne of the big moments in the film is when Thomas tells Victor that Victor makes his mom cry. His point is that Victor is causing his mother pain; he may not have abandoned his mother, like Arnold did, but that doesn't mean he's caring for her by staying.
Victor has so much pain and hostility that he isn't nice to people. I'm reminded of the cliche we must love ourselves before we can love others. This seems to be the issue with Victor. The pain caused by Arnold's alcoholism and the fact that he abandons Victor is internalized by Victor as unlove. He has so much unforgiveness that he's literally toxic. It isn't until he forgives his dad that he can love; this is why the scene where Victor shares the ashes is so important, as it represents a turning point for him.
Thanks for your ideas.
Take care,
Lauren
I think your right, the love hate relationship and the fact that they had similar experiences made them grow closer together. I thought they seemed more like brothers and when you mentioned that Victor looks out for Thomas in a way, I completely agree, that's something that didn't cross my mind even though I thought of them in that way. Also while they were on their journey, they defiantly realized they were a lot closer then either of them have thought.
