Essay 3 Workshop

What role does forgiveness play in Smoke Signals?
From my point of view in Smoke Signals, forgiveness plays a large role in Victor, Thomas, and victor’s mom. Thomas and Victor had kind of a rocky past with eachother.I think it was easy in a way for Thomas to forgive victor. Because they as kids were friends, and Thomas understood victor was upset about his dad walking out of the family. Example of that would be when victor as a kid beat up Thomas. And when there on their trip victor says he’s sorry for beating him up years after it happened. Victor I believe forgives his dad in the end of the movie for walking out on him and his mom. I say this because he just seems different on his way back from their trip. Like he might not have understood why but he moved on and forgave his dad. It shows when he gave Thomas some of his dad’s ashes to throw in the river to become a salmon. Another character though of was victor’s mom. I think she forget victors dad for the physical abuse that we saw in the begging of the movie and for walking out on their family after he died. These three characters are who came to mind when I about what forgivness played in Smoke Signals.

  1. Hi Sam,
I think you did a great job on hitting each of the points on forgiveness. You might want to go through it and make it a little bit longer. I think you probably have a lot more to say, maybe you could add some personal stuff.Read through it again and check your grammar I know that I have a hard time with that. Why did Victor need to forgive his dad? What make you think that Victors mom forgive Arnold? Why do you think he shared the ashes with Thomas? Do you think Thomas had to forgive Arnold? Hope some of these questions help. Great job!

  2. Hi Sam,

You have a great outline on what you want to talk about but I think you should elaborate a little bit more on your thesis, body and conclusion. This is a great start for your final essay. Your thesis is good on talking about the points of forgiveness. There is much more needed to be said. You may want to fix your grammar a little bit but all and all you have a great paper to start with.

  3. Hello, You have stated your argument and what you believe.
    What’s strong about the essay?
You essay isn't strong, because you don't provide enough examples to make you thesis believable. You need to be more precised and detailed. Your paragraphs are too little, you need more, to let us understand your point of view. You also have many grammar mistakes in your sentences, proof read and come across your mistakes.
What other suggestions or feedback do you want to provide the writer?
You should have examples such as quotes to modify your argument. Also we already know the story already, you don't have to restate it anymore.

I did like reading your essay though, you just need to work on it a little more.
    Thanks, Lesley

  4. 1. What is the writer’s thesis? Can you find the statement? Is it the main point the rest of the essay works to develop?

I could not find your thesis statement.

    2. What evidence is cited to prove and support the writer’s thesis? What pieces of evidence are cited from the readings and/or the writer’s observations to support the thesis?

You cited some evidence, but I think you need some more evidence to prove your argument.

    3. Is the writer’s reasoning/critical thinking provided to explain how the evidence proves and supports the thesis?

    Yes, but could use more.

    4. What else could the writer cite as evidence in this essay?

You could use quotes from scenes from the movie.

    6. What’s strong about the essay?

    7. What other suggestions or feedback do you want to provide the writer?

I think that you need to elaborate more on how forgiveness plays a role in the movie. You have a great outline, but I think that you need more to it. You should have an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You also have quite a few grammatical errors.

  5. Samantha,

All of the characters that you listed above were good examples of forgiveness. All of them had to deal with abandonment. Victor and his mother suffered the abandonment of Arnold. Thomas suffered the abandonment of both his parents. Of course, it wasn't intentional, but nonetheless he had to grow up without their love.

You didn't write much, so I can't really give you too much feedback. I think that this is a pretty good summary of what you'll be writing about. Now it's a matter of building an essay out of these ideas. Perhaps you could use the paragraph you have written as your introduction. It would need some modification though, it's a little on the long side.
